The Velvet Nostalgic
You eat with your memory. The best version of anything is the one someone once made for you — and you've been lovingly chasing it since.
Not a preference — a habitus. Taste you didn't so much choose as inherit, then forgot you were wearing.
Taste posture
The taste, measured
Taste capital
The curious middle. You read the reviews, then trust your gut anyway.
Cultural goodwill. You recognise more than you'd claim to own — earnest, curious, doing the reading. Aspiration with good manners and one foot in each world. — after Bourdieu's three zones of taste
“Taste classifies, and it classifies the classifier.”— Pierre Bourdieu, DistinctionTaste capital tier: Middle
Your place in the social space
After Bourdieu's map of taste: volume of capital up the side, composition across the bottom. The twenty-four, and you.
The spread — six cards, one life
Each card reads one corner of your life and points to a ware we'd stake our name on. Follow one and Tastety may receive a small tribute, at no cost to you.
Ways of seeing this card
“Seeing comes before words.”— John Berger, Ways of Seeing
You keep the warmth others throw away. Memory is a flavour, and you season generously.
No single reading is the true one. The card you see depends on what you bring to it.

Still Life with the Velvet Nostalgic · oil on canvas
After Berger: to have a thing painted was a way of owning it. Here is what you'd own.
The Velvet Nostalgic's taste guide
A field guide, not a rulebook — six standing orders for a palate like this.
- Eat
- The dish somebody's grandmother made, ideally somebody's actual grandmother. Learn one heirloom recipe well enough to pass it on.
- Listen
- The songs that smell like a kitchen from twenty years ago — and their covers, to argue with. Liner notes count as literature.
- Wear
- Vintage with a story, inherited when possible. Fabric that remembers is worth two of the fabric that doesn't.
- Go
- Places with memory: the old dining rooms, the towns that never renovated, the restaurant that still writes the bill by hand.
- Read
- Family sagas and food memoirs; anything where a recipe carries a plot. Keep tissues near the acknowledgments.
- Skip
- The renovation, the reboot, the 'elevated' version of a thing that was already whole. Improvement is often just forgetting.
- ISeason everything with memory; serve seconds.
- IIThe recipe is an heirloom. Handle accordingly.
- IIIThey do still make them like they used to — at this table.
Take this guide as a syllabus. The studied palate earns its opinions one deliberate try at a time — tick them off slowly.
